Biography:

Professor Adel Sharif is currently a Professor of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Surrey. Prof. Sharif is a Chartered Chemical Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is the winner of the 2005 Royal Society Brian Mercer Senior Award for Innovation in Science and Technology. He is also the winner of the 2008 Science Business first European Academic Enterprise Award in the Energy & Environment. Prof. Sharif’s work received Royal Recognition. In 2011, the University of Surrey was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Water Research in which Prof’s Sharif desalination work played a major role. Prof. Sharif is a founder of Modern Water plc, a London Exchange AIM Market listed company. He obtained his first degree in Chemical Engineering from Baghdad University followed by M.Sc and PhD from Swansea University. His research interests have been in the areas of Water, Energy and Food with application in Membrane Separation, Desalination, Water Treatment, CFD, and Renewable Energy (Solar Thermal, Osmotic Power, and Hydro Power). He has over 170 publications; is an inventor and co-inventor of more than 20 inventions and has successfully supervised over 20 Ph.D. theses and more than 60 M.Sc dissertations.

Current Research and Recent Achievements:

The main theme of Prof. Sharif’s research interests has been in the areas of Water, Energy and Food with applications in Membrane Separation, Desalination, Water Treatment, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Heat Transfer, and Renewable Energy (Solar Thermal, Osmotic Power, Low Grade Heat, and Hydro-Power).

Prof. Sharif’s research activities, in the area of desalination and renewable power generation, have attracted substantial research funding and investments for commercial exploitation during the last twenty five years, from various funding bodies and financial institutions.

Prof. Sharif’s research and innovation work in the area of desalination and renewable power generation, was supported by the Royal Society Brain Mercer Senior Award for innovation. This led to the formation of a spin-out company Surrey Aquatechnology Ltd which was merged with Modern Water plc and floated on the London AIM Market in 2007 raising around £30 million for 40% of the company and giving the company a market value of around £70 million.
