Biography:

The research area of Dr. Gökçeoğlu, which is original and pioneering for international scientific community, is developing novel methods to determine the mechanical characteristics, mechanical indices and petrological characteristics of rocks from several regions of Turkey. For this purpose, he carried out many studies to identify the uniaxial compressive strength of different rock types, modulus of elasticity, deformation, and brittleness by using neural networks, fuzzy models and different regression analyses. Outcomes of these studies were several non-linear and fuzzy methods, which produce realistic results and are further developable, for determining the mechanical characteristics of difficult rock types. Depending on the population increase, large engineering construction projects are being implemented such as high-rise buildings, tunnels, dams, deep excavations and high fillings, etc. Here, the deformation module of the rock mass is the most important parameter to protect the safety and economy of the design. Since the beginning of the 2000s, Dr. Gökçeoğlu has developed fundamental approaches and the formulas obtained from these approaches have been used successfully for many construction works.

Most of the research projects which he was involved as manager or researcher, were supported by Hacettepe University. Other funding bodies for his research projects were European Union Commission FP6 grant, joint calls of TUBITAK-CNRST (Morocco) and International Joint Research Project-MONBUSHO. In 2006, he received the TUBITAK Encouragement Award for his original and pioneering works. As of 2019, his h-index is 44 in Web of Science and 50 in Google Scholar. According to Google Scholar citation counts and research subjects, he ranked 3rd in Engineering Geology, 11th in Rock Mechanics, 2nd in Landslides and 1st in Natural Hazards.

Current Research and Recent Achievements:

Currently, he is working on tunnels, regional natural hazard assessments and citizen science in geo-hazards.

Experiences:

After graduation from University, he has worked as a professional engineer for one year. During the last 30 years approximately, he has been working as researcher in University. He has been in various countries during his academic and professional life. Some of these countries are France, Italy, Oman, Morocco, Malaysia, and India. He has completed several research and application projects especially on landslides, slope stability, and tunnel. Currently, he is the Dean of Engineering Faculty of Hacettepe University, Chairman of Executive Committee of Hacettepe Technopolis and Hacettepe Technology Transfer Center.

As the researcher, he has published over 130 research articles in refereed international scientific journals and these papers have approximately 10000 citations. He is also the Associate Editor of Computers & Geosciences and Landslides. In addition, he was the previous Associate Editor of Arabian Journal of Geosciences and Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment.
