Biography:

Mawieh Hamad is Professor of Immunology / Molecular Biology at the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, University of Sharjah, UAE. He leads a research group (Iron Biology Group) at the Sharjah Institute for Medical Research, UOS. He received his BSc in Biology in 1990 from Oklahoma State University, OK, USA and his Ph.D. in Immunology/Molecular Biology in 1995 from the University of Tulsa, OK, USA. Prior to joining the UOS, he was a faculty member at the Department of Biology, Hashemite University, Jordan and served for a number of years as head of the R&D unit, Jordan Medical Solution Manufacturing Company. His current research work, which is funded by several institutional and national research grants, focuses on understanding the role of estrogen in intracellular iron metabolism in health and disease. Recent published work by his group has shown that estrogen depletes intracellular iron in breast and ovarian cancer cells and increases cell susceptibility to chemotherapy-induced apoptosis.
