Biography:

Professor Salim S. Abdool Karim is a distinguished South African clinical infectious diseases epidemiologist, renowned for his significant scientific contributions and leadership in the global response to AIDS and Covid-19. He directs the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) and holds a Professorship of Global Health at Columbia University in New York. His expertise is further leveraged as a Special Advisor on pandemics to the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO). He is a highly cited scientist with over 500 peer-reviewed publications and has served on the editorial boards of prestigious medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Global Health, and Lancet HIV. His groundbreaking work has earned him numerous international accolades, such as the Lasker Prize, the Canada Gairdner Award, and Japan's Hideyo Noguchi Prize. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of both the US National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Microbiology.
