Biography:

The President of Bangladesh appointed Prof. Dr. Faridul Alam, a renowned academician and researcher, as Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS). Prof. Alam was also the Director and Professor of Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences (BIHS), and also the Director and Professor of the National Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, Bangabandhu Sheik Mujib Medical University, Dhaka. He passed MBBS (MD) from University of Dhaka in 1980, DTM&H in 1986 from University of Liverpool, UK. He awarded Fellowship in 1995 from John Hopkins University, USA, and DMUD in 1998 from USTC, Chittagong. He was awarded Ph.D. in 2003 by University of Dhaka.

He has to his credit over 35 years of practical and illustrious experience in clinical medicine, nuclear medicine, research, and teaching. He has supervised and guided several dozens of postgraduate students for Master and Ph.D. He was the project director of national ADP―Newborn Screening project for Congenital Hypothyroidism―a development project and research of the Ministry of Science. After the successful implementation of the project, Bangladesh entered into the world of newborn screening.

He participated in more than hundred meetings, organized by various societies, both national and international. He is a skilled scientific organizer. He has to his credit 106 publications in national and international journals. He is also actively involved in various national and international bodies.

Joining the BUHS as its new VC, he promised to build the BUHS a model university in the fields of health sciences, research and health development, particularly in the development of skilled human resources.

Current Research and Recent Achievements:
  • Reorganizing the quality of education and teaching of Bangladesh university of Health Sciences.

  • Coordinated research activities with different national and international bodies

  • Project Director (PD) of Bangladesh Government's ADP, Newborn Screening project for congenital hypothyroidism which was a development and research project of the Ministry of Science Technology (MOST). After the successful implementation of the project, country entered into the world of Newborn Screening.

Experiences:
  • Thirty-five years of practical experience in clinical medicine, nuclear medicine, and research, mostly worked in National Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences, BSMMU, BAEC, Dhaka.

  • He was the Professor and & Director of National Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences for 20 years. Worked with scientists for development of nuclear sciences in biological sciences.

  • Guided a few dozen post-graduate students as a supervisor for Master and Ph.D.

  • He made different protocols for diagnosis and treatment of thyroid, cardiac and cancers management from his research.

  • He did different coordinated researches with international bodies like UNO, IINCEF, IAEA WHO etc.

  • He was member of different committees of BSMMU, BAEC, and Ministry of Science and Technology. He took part in the implementation of works/policy of BAEC and ministry. he also took part in different national and international seminar and workshop as representative Bangladesh.

  • He is the founder member of Nuclear medicine, thyroid and ultrasound society of Bangladesh. Secretary General, Scientific Secretary and Publication Secretary of Bangladesh Society of Nuclear Medline for 6 years. Also, executive editor of the "Bangladesh Journal of Nuclear Medicine".
