Biography:

Prof. Dr. Raymond Ooi obtained BSc from USM, Master of Engineering from Nanyang Technological University in photonics and Dr.rer.nat (PhD) from Universitaet Konstanz, Germany in 2003 on quantum optics and laser cooling of molecules. As Research Associate at Texas A&M University he worked with Prof. Marlan Scully on nonlinear optics, quantum coherence and laser interaction techniques. During this time, he was a Visiting Scientist at Princeton University and Max-Planck Institut fuer Quantenoptik. In 2006 he joined KAIST as a Research Professor and Korea University as Assistant Professor where he developed his research on intense laser matter interactions. He then joined University of Malaya as Associate Professor and started the “Quantum and Laser Science" group. Under the support of High Impact Research grant he has developed a femtosecond laser and optics lab. His research has produced more than 100 ISI papers (mostly in Q1 journals), including three Nature Scientific Reports and two Physical Review Letters, with more than 1300 citations covering various aspects of quantum physics, quantum optics, nonlinear optics and spectroscopy, photonic structures and Bose-Einstein condensates. He served as the Chief Editor for the Jurnal Fizik Malaysia, editorial member for Central European Journal of Physics and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) Science Journal. In 2013, he received the Malaysian Toray Science Foundation Science & Technology award. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) in 2015, and has actively contributed to scientific issues of national interest. In 2018 Prof Raymond initiated the first international conference on Quantum and Nonlinear Optics (QNO2018) in Kuala Lumpur.

Current Research and Recent Achievements:

Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and a recipient of 2013 Malaysian Toray Science Foundation award

His current research is on control quantum properties of light in interactions intense laser pulses with matter. He is also passionate about the questions about life and the connection with spiritual science, philosophy of nature and quantum theory.
