Tehran to hold 1st Mustafa Scientific Prize

Held by Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology, Noor Ibn al-Ḥaytham film competition is part of the Mustafa ^(pbuh) Prize.

According to the Public Relations Department of Mustafa ^(pbuh) Prize, 1-minute short films made by students of Iranian high schools will participate in this competition. Each film must be made by a group of two or three students and they must tackle themes like Vision Science, Optics and Light Usage.

Students from different schools can work together on a project. Students can find their inspiration from their own text books or any scientific book or journals.

UNESCO has named 2015 the international year of Light (Noor) in honor of the 1000th anniversary of publication of Book of Optics by Muslim scientist Ibn al-Haytham. Noor Ibn al-Ḥaytham film competition is held to commemorate Ibn al-Haytham’s contribution to the world of science.

Aesthetic, educational aspect, scientific aspect, creativity, students’ role and repeatability of the works are some of the criteria of judging the films.

Until now (20 days till the deadline of Noor Ibn al-Ḥaytham film competition) more than 2000 short films have sent their movies to the secretariat of Mustafa ^(pbuh) Prize. More than 4000 students have worked on the films since each film is made by at least two students.

Schools and research centers around Iran have welcomed this idea of student films. Razi research center in Shiraz with 351 films, Farabi research center in Darab with 12 films and Rouhani school in Marvdasht with 10 films are the front runners of Noor Ibn al-Ḥaytham film competition.

The awards of this competition include 100 golden Azadi coins for the top 100 films, appreciation plate from National Elites Foundation for top 20 student filmmakers, presentation in scientific TV programs for top 20 films and filmmakers, 20 laboratory equipment sets for 10 schools and 10 research centers which get more points for the overall films presented.

The Mustafa Prize is a top science and technology award granted to the top researchers and scientists of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states biennially. The laureates in each section will be awarded US$ 500,000 which is financed through the endowments made to the Prize.
