MSTF Media reports:
One of the major points that came out at the health discussion that looked into critical gaps in developing technology for health in Islamic countries, held at Sultan Qaboos University, is the need for an extensive network of muslim scientists to know the variety of specialisations and expertise leading to better collaborations.
"There was certainly lot of emphasis on cardiovascular and metabolic diseases as well as stroke and neurological diseases. Also mental problems was touched upon. It seems there is a lot of people with mental illnesses these days," said Prof Jackie Ying, a Mustafa Prize laureate, who chaired the session along with The MSTF Representative, Rassoul Dinarvand, and Dean of SQU's College of Medicine and health Sciences, Omar Rawas.
"I personally think infectious diseases is also very important. We all recognised that many of the problems we have are from what we eat and our life style," Prof Ying said.
The health experts pointed out that veterinary aspect also has to be looked into and not just human health.
Co-organized by Mustafa Science and Technology Foundation and SQU in Muscat, the 4th STEP brought together 80 scientists from different fields to discuss three issues of Health, Water and Energy in four days.
